The first U.S. causality in Afghanistan was killed by a 14 year-old sniper. According to experts, this is only one of 300,000 children who are serving as soldiers in 40 countries around the world. Experts say many of these child combatants are abducted or recruited by force and often compelled to follow orders under threat of death.

San Diego State University student Katie Bradel will share her experiences with child combatants, who were enslaved and forced to fight in Uganda, at Rowan University on Thursday, November 17 from 11 a.m. to noon in the Rowan Hall Auditorium.

Later in the evening, Bradel's documentary Invisible Children, slated for theatrical release in 2007, will be played. The film captures Ugandan children fleeing attempted kidnappings by a rebel army. After the film, donations to the Invisible Children foundation will be accepted. All proceeds will go directly to the foundation's efforts to provide education and safe housing for former soldiers in Uganda. The films start at 7 p.m. in the Rowan Hall Auditorium.

For more information about the discussion please contact Tara Timberman of the Rowan University Writing Arts Department at 856-256-4861or timberman@rowan.edu. More information about Invisible Children can be obtained at www.invisiblechildren.com. This program is free and open to the public.
