Change reflects transformation of University

The new logo, introduced on May 2, 2005, was created to represent Rowan University?s transition from a local state college to a Top Tier regional public university. Our institution has changed dramatically, both physically and in academic reputation, since 1997 when we changed our name to Rowan University. Rowan has become one of the most recognized and highly regarded colleges and universities in the state.

How we went about the process:

In the spring of 2004 the president formed a campus-wide committee?including faculty and students from art, public relations and marketing?to develop a new visual identity and graphic standards for the University. The goal was to identify the key messages the logo should convey and create a graphic symbol that would express those messages in a wide range of applications.

The committee studied hundreds of university logos from around the country, including those of our competitors and our aspirant institutions, and concluded that the new logo had to reflect the University?s character, not personal taste, and differentiate us from other colleges and universities in the region.

The symbolism in the logo:

The new art is a well-crafted and flexible logo standard that will serve our graphic identity needs in a variety of media. This simple, yet elegant logo is a metaphor for Rowan University with elements that represent our traditions and values as well as the future of the University.

The torch is a traditional symbol of education and appears in our official seal. It represents our core mission of teaching, scholarship and community service. The unique combination of an oak leaf and flame represents our future. The flame symbolizes our passion for active learning. The oak leaf implies growth with stability and represents the many oak trees on our campus that contribute to its natural beauty. The oak leaf is also a part of the Alumni Association logo and recognizes the contributions our alumni have made in their fields and in their communities.
