A film made in 48 hours by Rowan University's Cinema Workshop film club took home three top awards at the recent Philadelphia Film Festival. Following a screening of all 30 films made during the Philadelphia regional ?48-Hour Film Project? competition, the Cinema Workshop entry, "Nights at the Round Table," was named the ?Audience Favorite? award in one of the two screening groups and received ?Best Use of Prop? and ?Best Costume? honors from among all the 48-Hour entries.

Cinema Workshop?s "Nights at the Round Table," a fantasy film alternating between a modern-day group of friends playing ?Dungeons & Dragons? and a group of medieval knights on a quest to rescue a princess from an evil sorcerer, was screened just two days after being completed as part of the ?48-Hour Film Project,? a national short film competition that requires teams to produce a film from start to finish within a 48-hour time frame.

The film was produced April 8-10 during the 14th annual Philadelphia Film Festival. On Friday, April 8, at 7 p.m., teams chose a genre at random and then were assigned a prop, character, and line of dialogue to be incorporated into their films. Each team then had until 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, to write, shoot, edit, and score a 4-8 minute film using the assigned elements. According to Cinema Workshop faculty advisor Sean O?Leary, only 20 of the original 30 teams completed their films before the deadline and were eligible for screening awards.

Film viewers selected "Nights at the Round Table" as their favorite among 12-15 films screened in Group A, while judges honored the film for its use of the assigned prop (an umbrella) and for the team?s hastily assembled medieval costumes. Last year, Cinema Workshop?s 48-Hour film, "The Delivery," was named one of the 10 best Philadelphia entries. In 2003, a 48-Hour film produced by a team of Rowan graduates received the ?Audience Favorite? and ?Best Script? awards.

O?Leary said participating in the 48-Hour Film Project and having their resulting films honored has been a true ?hands-on? learning experience for Cinema Workshop members. ?Getting into the 48-Hour Film Project Top Ten screening last year and actually winning three awards this year is very encouraging to our students,? he said. ?Their success lets them know that their creative work can hold its own against, and even surpass, the work of students from bigger, more well-known colleges, as well as the work of film and video professionals.?
