Event is Part of Rowan?s Asian-Pacific Cultural Heritage
Month Festivities
Members of the Philadelphia Chinese Opera Society, Peter Tang?s Chinese Music Ensemble, the HeiLongJiang Acrobatic Troupe and other world-renowned Asian performers will be featured during Rowan University?s annual ?Asian Extravaganza,? on Sunday, April 24. The event will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Pfleeger Concert Hall, Wilson Hall, on the Rowan campus near the intersection of U.S. Route 322 and Joseph Bowe Boulevard, Glassboro.
With the elaborate make-up, unique face painting, colorful costumes, singing, dancing, and martial arts reminiscent of the Peking Opera, the Philadelphia Chinese Opera Society will retell famous tales from history, legend and literature. The group will perform the Banner Dance from The Flower Fairy opera and The Monkey King, a martial arts action-comedy derived from the classical novel The Journey to the West.
Peter Tang?s Chinese Ensemble will perform traditional melodies and popular folk songs using native Asian instruments. A native of China, Tang has performed in the United States for three years, following in the footsteps of his father, Yu Bin Tang, a prestigious Chinese classical musician. He plays the erhu and gaohu native Chinese instruments.
The HeiLongJiang Acrobatic Troupe, which has awed audiences throughout the United States and abroad, will perform their amazing skills for the Rowan audience. In addition, Jingqui Zhang, a professor in the Tian Jin College of Music in China, will sing folk songs, the Jade River Dance Troupe of Cherry Hill will perform folk dances and Shunguo Zhao of the Tian Jin Metropolitan Music and Dance Company in China will play the pipa, a four-stringed lute. Rowan students Sujeong Kim and Sona J. Thaker also will participate, singing Korean folk songs and performing an Indian dance, respectively.
Tickets are $14 each for the general public and $3 for senior citizens and Rowan University faculty, staff and students with official Rowan IDs. Free admission for children under 13. Advance-purchase group rates of $10 per person are available for groups of 10 or more.
