South Jersey Teachers Attain National Board Certification With Help From Rowan PDS Program
February 11, 2005
Five South Jersey teachers from school districts participating in Rowan University?s Professional Development School (PDS) program recently achieved National Board Certification from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), a nonprofit organization established to promote professional teaching excellence. Only 32 New Jersey teachers received NBPTS certification this year and five of those are affiliated with a Rowan PDS.
Rowan PDS teachers earning National Board Certification are:
Monroe Township School District
Elizabeth Cerino, Whitehall Elementary
Dana Stow, Radix Elementary
Dawn Symonds, Radix Elementary
Vineland Public Schools
Melissa Capelli, Johnstone
Dannielle Smith, Johnstone
National Board Certification recognizes teachers who meet and exceed national standards for outstanding classroom instruction. The voluntary certification process requires a rigorous performance-based assessment that candidates have up to three years to complete.
With funds from the New Jersey Department of Education, Rowan University?s College of Education established a Candidate Subsidy Support Site in 2003 to provide technical assistance to teachers as they prepare materials for certification consideration. Through the Rowan PDS program, teachers receive help preparing written assessments documenting knowledge of content and instructional methods and assembling portfolios and classroom observation videos that document accomplished practice.
Carol Sharp, College of Education Dean, said guiding educators through the National Board Certification process is part of Rowan?s ongoing efforts to strengthen teacher development at all levels. ?The College of Education is committed to providing programs at every level of the continuum for teacher professional growth,? she said. ?Our programs support pre-service (college preparation), induction (first three years), professional practice and accomplished teaching levels.?
Accomplished teachers also can hone their leadership, pedagogical skills, and content knowledge through a special master?s degree program to begin at Rowan in the fall of 2005. Designed especially for teachers who want to remain in the classroom, the new M.Ed. in standards-based practice is based on the teaching excellence standards measured within National Board Certification. As a result, teachers will be prepared to seek National Board Certification as they complete the degree. In addition, teachers who already have attained certification will receive course credit towards the M.Ed. in standards-based practice.
