ROWAN ARTIST HONORED WITH STATE ARTS COUNCIL FELLOWSHIP
February 11, 2005
GLASSBORO - Skeffington Thomas, chair of Rowan University's Department of Art, has been recognized by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts (NJSCA) for his "outstanding work" with a 2005 Individual Artist Fellowship.
Thomas, a ceramic artist, is one of 32 artists selected from 523 applicants in seven artistic disciplines. The Fellowship is valued at $10,000. Judging involved a panel of peers working in the related field reviewing Thomas's work, which was praised for its "very high artistic quality."
"This recognition is quite an honor - and well deserved," said Dr. Donald L. Gephardt, Dean of the College of Fine & Performing Arts at Rowan, while he also paid tribute to Thomas' "outstanding artistry."
A professor at Rowan since 1997, Thomas completed his Bachelor of Arts at Lewis and Clark College and his Master of Fine Arts at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. He has served as Director-at-large for the National Council on Education of the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), on the Board of Directors for The Creative Glass Center of America (1998-2004) and continues to sit on the board of The Clay Studio, Philadelphia.
Thomas' work has been seen in exhibitions throughout the country including NCECA's 2005 exhibit in Maryland and its 2003 "Emerging Artists 1996-200: New Ceramic Art" show in Chicago; "The Big Show" last year in Indianapolis; "Winterfest 2004" in Baltimore; and as part of the recent Rowan Art Department Faculty Show for the Long Beach Island Foundation in Loveladies, NJ. He has shown his work internationally at the "Ceramic Grand Prix" in Sarreguimines, France.
His solo shows scheduled in 2005 include "Skeff Thomas: Teapots and More" for the Vineland Art Alliance and "Skeff Thomas: Recent Work" at the MT Burton Gallery in Surf City, NJ.
Thomas is a resident of Bridgeton, NJ.
