Throughout the month of February, Rowan University will highlight the cultural, political, and social history and heritage of African Americans during its annual African American History Month celebration. The University?s longest standing heritage celebration, African American History Month at Rowan will feature a wide array of activities, including those listed below. February 2005

All Month -- "Historical Journey of the Delta" -- Exhibit focusing on development of African American Delta culture from 1865-1965
Location: Entrance to Campbell Library, Rowan campus

February 2

7-8 p.m. -- Story Time & Craft Show -- Presentation by Kathleen Lindsey, Clayton, N.J., resident and author of "Sweet Potato Pie," a stellar example of multicultural children?s literature
Location: Glassboro Public Library, 2 Center Street, Glassboro

February 2-4

9 a.m.-5 p.m. -- Rowan University Jazz Festival -- A uniquely American musical genre with roots in African American culture takes center stage as high school students from around the state improve their musical virtuosity during three days of workshops and seminars.

6:30 p.m.-- "Red, Black, Green: 101" -- Presentation focusing on African American heritage and its connection to those three colors

7:30 p.m. -- "The Birth of a Nation" -- Film Screening and Discussion
Location: Wilson Hall, Room 212
Sponsor: History Department and Student History Association

February 3-4

8 p.m. -- Jazz Festival Concerts -- Guest instrumentalist, composer and arranger Mike Tomaro will perform with the Rowan University Lab Band and other university music students and faculty. A versatile artist, Tomaro has written and performed pieces for many instruments, including saxophone, flute and clarinet.

10:50 a.m.-12:05 p.m. -- "The Making of a Lynching Culture" -- Lecture by Dr. William Carrigan, Assistant Professor of History at Rowan University. Reception and booksigning following the presentation.

6-8 p.m. -- "The Making of African American Identity" -- Lecture by Dr. Michael J. C. Echeruo, the William Safire Professor of Modern Letters at Syracuse University. Reception to follow in Rowan Hall Atrium.
