Three Rowan Radio Staffers Place First in Broadcast Media Competition

Three Rowan Radio, 89.7 WGLS-FM staff members placed first and a fourth was a finalist in Philadelphia?s annual AIR Awards Media Competition. Presented by broadcasters for broadcasters, the competition honors and celebrates Philadelphia-area achievement in radio, while raising funds for the Southeast Pennsylvania chapter of the March of Dimes.
Rowan students placing first were:
Senior Kevin Fischer of Buena, son of David and Patricia Fischer of Buena and a member of Buena Regional High School?s class of 2000
Senior Kim Shipman of Egg Harbor Township, daughter of Patricia and David Shipman of Egg Harbor Township and a 1999 graduate of Egg Harbor Township High School
Junior Kristin Davis of Tabernacle, daughter of Diane Carbone and Ellwood Davis of Tabernacle and a graduate of Shawnee High School
Fischer and Shipman won first place for ?Best College Documentary? for "Childhood Memories: As Seen on TV," a radio documentary that takes the listener back to a time when children?s shows dominated the Philadelphia airwaves. Davis received first place in the ?Best College News Program? category for her weekly Rowan news program, The Rowan Report. In addition, senior Paul Gornowski of Audubon, the son of Paul and Theresa Gornowski of Audubon and a 2001 graduate of Audubon High School, was a finalist in the competition in the ?Best Sports Reporting? category.
Heard in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area at 89.7 on the FM dial and on the Rowan web site at http://wgls.rowan.edu, Rowan Radio was established in 1964 to broadcast information and entertainment programming for the benefit of the University and surrounding communities. In so doing, the station has established a tradition of broadcast excellence, winning more than 69 regional and national awards since 1993, including ?College Station of the Year? in 1997.
The on-campus station is solely operated and managed by Rowan students under the supervision of general manager and adjunct professor Frank Hogan and assistant manager Derek Jones.
