Some were young students interested in careers as broadcasters. Others were Rowan students or community members who wanted to share their musical tastes with a listening audience. Whatever their backgrounds or aspirations, the present and past staff members of Rowan University radio station WGLS-FM will reunite on Saturday, October 2, to celebrate the station?s 40th anniversary.

The reunion begins at 4 p.m. with tours of the radio station and College of Communication. More than 200 guests then will reminisce, dine and dance at the Enyon Ballroom in Rowan?s Student Center. WGLS alumni attending will include Metro Traffic reporter John Butterworth of Gloucester, Comcast Corp. senior vice president and chief accounting officer and controller Larry Salva of Moorestown and Lite Rock 106.7 (New York) disc jockey Victor Sosa.

?It's great to have so many successful alums from all over the country returning to their roots and rekindling old friendships they made at Rowan Radio,? said WGLS general manager and Rowan adjunct professor Frank Hogan. ?Their interest in and support of the station speaks well of the positive experience they had working with us and how it impacted their lives.?

Heard in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area at 89.7 FM and on the Rowan web site at http://wgls.rowan.edu, Rowan Radio was established in 1964 to broadcast information and entertainment programming for the benefit of the University and surrounding communities. In so doing, the station has established a tradition of broadcast excellence, winning more than 76 regional and national awards since 1993, including ?College Station of the Year? in 1997. The on-campus station is operated and managed solely by Rowan students under the supervision of general manager and adjunct professor Frank Hogan and assistant manager Derek Jones.

The station?s 40th anniversary celebration began in January with the airing monthly radio programs featuring Rowan deans reflecting on the station?s role in campus and community life through the years and continued in April with an awards banquet honoring current and past WGLS staffers. Co-sponsored by WGLS-FM and the Rowan Alumni Association, the reunion closes out the yearlong celebration.

At present, nearly 90,000 listeners each month and 1.2 million total web site visitors tune in to Rowan sports, entertainment and public service programs.
