Rowan Welcomes 1,000 Freshmen on August 29 ?Move-in Day?

Beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday, August 29, nearly 1,000 members of Rowan University?s Class of 2008 will begin their lives as college freshmen when they move on campus into Chestnut, Evergreen Magnolia, Mimosa and Mullica residence halls.
Rowan President Dr. Donald Farish and other volunteers will help 990 freshmen and their parents carry boxes, baggage and bedding to residence hall dorm rooms during the university?s annual ?Move-in Day.? About 72 percent of the Rowan?s freshman class will reside on campus.
NOTE: Beginning at 11 a.m., President Farish and Rowan vice presidents will assist students moving into Chestnut Hall on Carpenter Street. Upperclassmen volunteers from Rowan Greek organizations also will lend a hand.
More than 6,300 students applied and 3,250 accepted to Rowan for the 2004-2005 school year. The 1,383 freshmen enrolled for the fall have an average combined SAT score of 1150, with 78 percent ranking in the top 25 percent of their high school senior class.
?Move-in Day? kicks off ?Opening Days? at Rowan, a month of social and educational activities throughout September. Sponsored by the Student University Programmers, the events are designed to help ease new students? transition into college life. Events range from the informative to the entertaining, helping students get familiar with campus life and the communities and amenities surrounding the Rowan campus. ?Opening Days? activities include:
Sunday, August 29
The ?Jimmy Buffet? ? 3-7 p.m., Student Center Patio ? Students and parents can relax and release after the stress and strain of moving during an all-you-can-eat Caribbean buffet with live music provided by well-known Jimmy Buffett cover band, the Key West Band.
Ambassadors of Comedy ? 9-11 p.m., Student Center Patio ? Four comedians of different ethnic origins serve as cultural ambassadors of comedy.
Mentalist and Illusionist Wayne Hoffman ? 11-12:30 p.m., Student Center Pit ? Harnessing the power of the mind and the gift of illusion, Hoffman performs acts of kinesis and good old-fashioned magic.

?Extreme Day? ? Noon-5 p.m., Student Center Patio and Recreation Center Patio ? Members of the Rowan community can experience various simulated ?extreme sports? with a rock climbing wall, sky diving simulator, sports tournaments, laser tag and a BMX stunt show accompanied by music from Philadelphia radio station Y100.

Merchant Showcase, Student Center Patio ? Students can listen to live band performances as they see the best area merchants have to offer.
Virtual Treasure Hunt, 6:30 p.m., Student Center Pit ? This exciting event is where the real and wireless worlds collide. Students working individually or in teams will log into a special web site to get clues leading them on a treasure hunt throughout the Rowan campus. The treasure to be found?a check for one semester?s tuition (valued at $3,000)!
In addition, Tracy Morgan, comedic star of NBC?s Saturday Night Live and The Tracy Morgan Show, will bring perform at Rowan on September 17.
