College of Engineering Jumps in Rankings

GLASSBORO - For the fifth consecutive year, U.S News & World Report has ranked Rowan University among the best institutions of higher education in the United States in America's Best Colleges, its annual compilation of the nation's top colleges and universities.

In the 2005 edition, U.S News & World Report placed the University in the first tier of the North Region ? Master's, ranking Rowan 34th (tied) out of the 169 colleges and universities in this category. Rowan ranks third among the public schools in the region. (The Master's category refers to colleges and universities that provide a full range of undergraduate and master's programs. The North Region includes schools in New England and the Mid-Atlantic states.)

The overall rankings are based on a survey of peer institutions and up to 15 indicators of academic excellence, including retention rate, financial resources, class size, student-faculty ratio, proportion of full-time faculty, student selectivity and alumni giving. Information in the 2005 America's Best Colleges reflects Rowan's achievements: over the previous year, the graduation rate, percentage of classes with fewer than 20 students and SAT scores, among other categories, all have risen.

In addition to the overall University ranking, U.S. News & World Report ranked Rowan's College of Engineering ? less than a decade old ? 21st (tied) nationally among best undergraduate engineering programs accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology and placed the College's Chemical Engineering Department third in the nation. Last year, the College ranked 27th, and the Chemical Engineering Department ranked fifth. This year, U.S. News also ranked Rowan's Mechanical Engineering Department tied for 11th place and Civil Engineering Department tied for 12th place at schools where the highest degree is a bachelor's or master's degree.

"U.S. News & World Report's rankings address many of the factors we as an institution measure on a regular basis," said Dr. Donald Farish, president. "While the report is only one way in which students and parents may evaluate our success in serving our students and in achieving our goals, we nonetheless are pleased to see that Rowan is so well-respected in general and that our engineering programs continue to garner national attention."

The August 30 rankings issue of U.S News & World Report and the publication's book America's Best Colleges will be available as of August 23. The rankings also are listed at www.usnews.com.

In the recent past, Rowan has been recognized by other national organizations that evaluate colleges. Kaplan included the University in The Unofficial, Biased Insider's Guide to the 320 Most Interesting Colleges. Also, Kiplinger's named Rowan University one of the 100 Best Buys in Public Colleges and Universities and the Princeton Review included Rowan in an edition of The Best Northeastern Colleges.

In addition to the latest salute by U.S. News, The Princeton Review has named Rowan University a 2005 Best College in the Northeast, one of 151 institutions the annual publication cited in New England and part of the Mid-Atlantic States.
