South Plainfield native and recent Rowan University graduate Christine Buteas has been awarded a one-year Raimondo Fellowship from the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University. As one of only eight fellowship winners, Buteas will observe the New Jersey legislative process first-hand as a staff member in either the Democratic Senate or Democratic Assembly Majority offices. She also will receive an $8,625 stipend and significant tuition discount as a Rutgers graduate student.

The highly competitive Raimondo Fellowship is open to any Rutgers graduate student interested in learning about and participating in state government and the New Jersey legislative process. Buteas, the daughter of George and Kathy Buteas of South Plainfield, graduated summa cum laude from Rowan in May with a bachelor?s degree in law and justice. She currently works as a staff assistant in U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine?s Newark office and is pursuing a master?s degree in public administration at Rutgers-Newark.

?Politics is my passion,? said Buteas. ?I understand that change comes from within and the Raimondo fellowship will provide me with an opportunity to contribute to the citizens of New Jersey. I am very fortunate to have received this prestigious fellowship.?

Her interest in the political and legislative process led her participation in the Eagleton Institute?s ?Ready to Run? program, a bipartisan effort to recruit and train New Jersey women for all levels of public office, and the NEW Leadership residential summer institute for undergraduate women interested in assuming leadership roles on their campuses and later in life.

Buteas also distinguished herself as a student and athlete at Rowan, winning the Shirley O?Day Female Scholar Athlete Medallion Award, the Dr. Mary A. Rice Scholar Athlete Award and a Dean?s Tea Recognition Award. A three-time Academic All-American, Buteas was a member of the 2002 Division III National Championship-winning field hockey team at Rowan.
