Interesting Members of Rowan University?s Class of 2004 Available for Media Interviews
Laurie Lahey of Mantua ? With all the accomplishments Laurie Lahey has to her credit as a Rowan student, maybe a degree in time management should be added to the list. Somehow, during her four years at Rowan, Laurie has earned enough credits for degrees in history, English and American Studies, with minors in French and Political Science and concentrations in the Honors, International Studies, African American Studies and Women?s Studies programs. She achieved all this while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.92, qualifying her to graduate summa cum laude. She is a member of various honor societies, including Golden Key and Mortar Board, and has been selected as one of Rowan?s two nominees for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship Program. Considered one of the country?s most prestigious grants for graduate study, the Cooke scholarship provides funding for tuition, room and board, books, and other required fees for the length of the graduate degree program selected by the winner (with a maximum of six years). Contact Laurie Lahey by phone at 856-889-7237 (cell) or 856-415-0428 (home) or via email at lahe2443@students.rowan.edu.
Sandy and Susan Ebenhoech (E-bin-hoke) of Mickelton ? There?s no accounting for genes?unless you happen to be identical twins. These sisters have the exact same genes and as students in Rowan?s College of Business they both took accounting courses. On Friday, May 14, Sandy and Susan also will both graduate with degrees in business administration. Excelling academically, the duo both earned admission to the Golden Key and Beta Gamma Sigma honor societies and are graduating with honors. They do, however, differ in their areas of concentration, with Sandy choosing marketing and Susan selecting management information systems. Both of these highly photogenic twins are willing to speak with media and pose for graduation day photos. Phone Sandra and Susan Ebenhoech at 856-478-4301 (home) or email them at eben4869@students.rowan.edu or eben4838@students.rowan.edu.
Sabatino Mangini of Wenonah ? Somewhere in the back of his mind Rowan master?s in writing graduate Sabatino Mangini always had thought he might write a book about sports. A few months after completing the Rowan University course ?Writing the Nonfiction Book,? that vague idea became a concrete reality and he was writing a book for publication. Mangini, who writes freelance for several local newspapers and magazines and teaches writing and reading at Camden County College, took ?Writing the Nonfiction Book? in the spring of 2003 to fulfill a master?s degree requirement. As required by the course instructor, journalism and creative writing professor and department chair Carl Hausman, Mangini developed a prospectus for Top Italian-American Athletic Achievers, a book focusing on the compelling life stories of 15 sports legends, and submitted his work to five publishers the summer after completing the class. The following September, Sports Publishing, L.L.C. offered him a contract to write the book. Top Italian-American Athletic Achievers will hit stores in September. Mangini is the second student to sell a book begun while taking the nonfiction course. To find out more about his writing and publishing experiences, call Sabatino Mangini at 856-625-9403 or email him at smangini11@aol.com.
John Ludes of Pennsville ? How do you simultaneously complete four years of college and six years of military duty and graduate with honors? John Ludes can tell you. He did just that while studying for his bachelor?s degree in electrical and computer engineering. As a member of the Air National Guard, Ludes often experienced interruptions in his college studies for military assignments. He was even forced to suspend his studies for an entire year of military service between his sophomore and junior years. Now, both his military service and his college degree come to an end this summer, and he looks forward to a lucrative job in Tucson, Ariz., with Department of Defense contractor Raytheon Corporation. You can talk with John about his experiences by phone at 609-805-1255 or via email at lude8259@students.rowan.edu.
Gus and John Garton of Millville ? As graduates receive their diplomas this year, the Garton family of Millville will celebrate two commencement milestones. John Garton will be seated among the members of the Class of 2004, and his father Gus will be seated under the sycamore tree in front of Bunce Hall celebrating the 50th anniversary of his college commencement in 1954. The sycamore tree has grown through the years and so, Gus will note, has the college campus. In the father?s day, Bunce housed almost all of the university?s departments. Today, in his son?s time, it is home to only a fraction of Rowan?s offerings. To interview John or Gus Garton, call 856-825-3618.
