GLASSBORO -? Throughout 2004, Rowan University radio station WGLS-FM will host a variety of events in celebration of its 40th anniversary.
Heard in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area at 89.7 and on the Rowan web site at http://wgls.rowan.edu, Rowan Radio was established in 1964 to broadcast information and entertainment programming for the benefit of the University and surrounding communities. In so doing, the station has established a tradition of broadcast excellence, winning more than 69 regional and national awards since 1993, including <+>College Station of the Year<+> in 1997.
The on-campus station is solely operated and managed by Rowan students under the supervision of general manager and adjunct professor Frank Hogan and assistant manager Derek Jones.
<+>I am extremely proud of how the staff of WGLS-FM continues to provide a schedule of diversified programs reflecting the needs and interests of Rowan University and the South Jersey community,<+> said Hogan. <+>In addition, this student operation provides an educational experience that better prepares students for the work world and enhances their future career opportunities.<+>
Planned anniversary events include the airing monthly radio programs featuring Rowan deans reflecting on the station?s role in campus and community life through the years. The first segment will air on Monday, January 26. The station also will honor current WGLS staffers during an April 15 awards banquet and past staff members during an October 2 alumni reception. Rowan Radio alumni include disc jockeys, directors, producers, and instructors working in radio operations across the nation.
<+>As I plan the October alumni reception, I am thrilled to discover the number of WGLS alumni working in the communication field,<+> said Hogan. <+>In addition, many of our alumni stay connected with the station through volunteerism with and scholarships for students working for Rowan Radio.<+>
