Rowan to Host Dick Gregory at Annual Martin Luther King Breakfast
December 22, 2003
Funds Raised will Benefit Minority Students
Author, activist, comedian, actor and anti-drug crusader Dick Gregory will be the guest speaker at Rowan University?s 18th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast on Monday, January 19, at
9:30 a.m. in the Eynon Ballroom in the Student Center.
The breakfast, sponsored by the Rowan University Foundation, is held each year to honor Dr. King?s achievements. Money raised from the breakfast will go to the William H. Myers Scholarship Endowment Fund for deserving minority students.
Gregory has been involved in the Civil Rights Movement for more than four decades, as well as the human rights and peace movements. Known by many as a comedian and actor, he also has earned worldwide respect as an activist. An author of 15 books, a recording artist and a television and film personality, Gregory speaks candidly about racism, sexism and violence in America.
He participated in almost all of the major and minor marches, demonstrations and rallies of the Civil Rights era. He spoke at marches, voter registration rallies and benefit shows for the Congress of Racial Equality and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Gregory often was jailed with Dr. King as they demonstrated for Civil Rights in the 1960s, and at Dr. King?s urging Gregory became increasingly involved with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference?s efforts. He is recognized for using fasting, prayer and other peaceful means to call attention to causes in which he believes and to eliminate injustices with which he is concerned. He made sacrifices throughout his career in order to aid others.
Tickets for this scholarship fundraiser are $35 and must be purchased in advance from the Development Office by calling Diana Vallandingham at ext. 5411 or ext. 2401 (tables of eight may be reserved). All checks should be made payable to the Rowan University Foundation. PSEG has helped underwrite this event.
