Rowan University Chemical Engineering Department Ranked Fifth byU.S. News & World Report

Less than a decade after its founding, the Department of Chemical Engineering at Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ, has risen to the fifth highest ranked program of its kind in the nation, according to U.S News & World Report.
In its latest edition of ?America?s Best Colleges,? the prestigious publication placed Rowan?s Department of Chemical Engineering among the best undergraduate programs in the nation among those colleges and universities that primarily offer bachelor?s or master?s degrees.
Rowan?s College of Engineering offers bachelor?s and master?s degrees in engineering. The College has programs in chemical, civil and environmental, electrical and computer, and mechanical engineering. Presently, about 450 students are enrolled in the College, which is one of six academic colleges at Rowan University.
According to U.S News & World Report, the magazine based its rankings of programs accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology on the judgments of deans and senior faculty who rated each program with which they were familiar. Rowan?s Department of Chemical Engineering was one of only two public schools that made it to the top list.
U.S. News & World Report ranked Rowan?s College of Engineering 27th nationally among undergraduate engineering programs at institutions that primarily offer bachelor?s and master?s degrees.

And, for the fourth consecutive year, the magazine ranked Rowan University among the best institutions of higher education in the United States in its annual ranking.
The publication placed the University in the ?First Tier? of the Northern Region ? Master?s Level, ranking Rowan 33rd out of the 165 colleges and universities in this category. The majority of colleges are private institutions; Rowan ranks fourth among the public schools in the region.
?While we never will substitute U.S. News & World Report?s analysis for our own self-assessment of what we must do to continue to improve our quality, we pay respectful attention when these results are published,? said Dr. Donald Farish, Rowan University?s president. ?Naturally, we are pleased to see the magazine again ranks us in the first tier, and we are gratified for the respect and support from our colleagues at other universities.?
The rankings are based on a survey of peer institutions and 16 indicators of academic excellence, such as retention rate, graduation rate, student selectivity and alumni giving. The Northern Region includes schools in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland.
The rankings issue of U.S News & World Report and the publication?s book ?America?s Best Colleges? are available on newsstands. The rankings also are listed at www.usnews.com.
Rowan has been recognized by other national organizations that evaluate colleges. Kaplan included the University in ?The Unofficial, Biased Insider?s Guide to the 320 Most Interesting Colleges.? Also, Kiplinger's named Rowan University one of the <+>100 Best Buys in Public Colleges and Universities,<+> and the Princeton Review included Rowan in the latest edition of ?The Best Northeastern Colleges.?
Significant numbers of top-performing high school students continue to apply to the University. For the past four years Rowan has had five times more students who want to come to Rowan than the school can accommodate. In the last nine years, applications increased by 44 percent, and the average SAT score rose by 139 points. For the fall of 2003, 6,198 applications were received for only 1,250 seats. The freshmen class that entered this fall is the strongest in University history with a combined SAT score of 1153 compared to a national average of 1020.
