Glassboro?Rowan University?s student-run newspaper, The Whit, nabbed four awards in the 2002 Better College Newspaper Contest, sponsored by the New Jersey Press Association.

The Whit took second place in the overall General Excellence category among New Jersey collegiate newspapers.

The Whit staff also was recognized for excellence in a number of categories. Arts & entertainment editor Lauren Matthew, of Middletown, won first place in the Arts and Entertainment/Critical Writing category and received an honorable mention award in the Feature Writing category. Features editor Ryan McDermott, of Deptford, captured third place in the Feature Writing category and former editor-in-chief Michelle Wetzel, of Woodstown, received third place honors in the Opinion Writing category.

The awards were presented at the New Jersey Collegiate Press Association?s Spring Conference held at the Asbury Park Press in Neptune on April 3.
