Rowan Radio, 89.7 WGLS has a Silver CINDY award in the annual regional Cinema in Industry competition for the documentary Facing the Facts-The Use and Abuse of Alcohol.
Produced over a 12-week period by WGLS-FM members as part of their requirements for the advanced radio course at Rowan University, Facing the Facts: The Use and Abuse of Alcohol is a five-part series dealing with such issues as the law, alcoholism as a disease, drinking and driving, as well as treatment and recovery. Last year, Facing the Facts: The Use and Abuse of Alcohol was distributed to all New Jersey radio stations as a result of a grant received from the Rowan University Center for Addiction Studies.
Facing the Facts-The Use and Abuse of Alcohol also has won the Crystal Award of Excellence in the Communicator Awards national competition, first place in the statewide AP Broadcasters competition, first place in the 2001 New Jersey Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists competition and first place for Enterprise Reporting in the Philadelphia Press Association 2001 competition.
CINDY, an acronym for <+>Cinema in Industry,<+> began in 1959 as an industrial film competition. The Industry Film Producers Association, an American professional organization, created the competition. Later, this group became the Informational Film Producers of America and, in 1984, the Association of Visual Communicators. Today, the twice-a-year CINDY Awards are presented by the International Association of Audio Visual Communicators, a non-profit group representing theatrical, broadcast, non-broadcast, and interactive media professionals throughout the world.
