The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) introduced Dr. Dianne Dorland, dean of the Rowan University College of Engineering, as president of the professional society for 2003 at the group?s annual meeting in November in Indianapolis. Dorland is the first female to serve as leader of the 50,000-member organization.

A member of AIChE since 1969, Dorland has extensive leadership experience, including serving as meeting program chair of the 1997 Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, chairing the Education Division and serving as a member of the Executive Board of the Program Committee. She is currently on the Board of Directors and is a member of the Centennial Committee, planning the 100th anniversary of AIChE in 2008. She is also an AIChE Fellow.

Dorland's ongoing dedication to excellence in chemical engineering education is evident in her career achievements and AIChE activities. Prior to joining the Rowan administration, Dorland was chemical engineering department head at the University of Minnesota-Duluth for 10 years. She taught at the West Virginia Institute of Technology, and she worked for such major corporations and agencies as Union Carbide, DuPont and the Department of Energy.

She earned her Ph.D. from West Virginia University and her M.S. and B.S. in chemical engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
