The College of Education at Rowan University this week presented The Herman and Marie James Award for Creating an Excellent and Exciting Educational Environment for 2001-02 to Eastern Intermediate High School of the Eastern Camden County Regional School District, Voorhees.

This award, which honors the presidency of Dr. Herman James at Rowan University from 1984-1998, is open to public schools that have a professional relationship with Rowan University and are located in one of the eight southern New Jersey counties. A competitive honor in its fourth year, The Herman and Marie James Award includes $500 to purchase instructional and/or media materials for the selected school.

The award is based, among other areas, on how the school addresses issues dealing with social, cultural and ethnic diversity and the programs the school has developed to address the educational and social needs of its students.

In making the award, the College of Education recognized Eastern for its clear mission that contributes to creating an excellent and exciting education environment; collaborative work among faculty and school clubs to address social, cultural and ethnic diversity; and a commitment to providing an environment to develop life-long learners who are well rounded academically, emotionally and physically. The College also praised Eastern Intermediate for creating 45 student organizations that complement and enhance the academic program; offering a peer mediator program; establishing a club for students who experience significant educational, behavioral and social difficulties; and hosting a transition program for new students and a program developed in concert with Rowan to improve reading, among other achievements.

?While all the applications for this award presented many outstanding and diverse student programs, Eastern Intermediate High School?s application contained detailed program information that most closely aligned with the focus toward providing an excellent and exciting learning environment for students, as well as a long partnership with Rowan University in a variety of educational activities,? said Dr. Robert W. Kern, director, Office of Field Experiences and School/University Partnerships, who coordinated the award process for Rowan.

?We are proud to receive the Herman and Marie James Award for Creating an Excellent and Exciting Educational Environment,? said Dr. Barry J. Galasso, superintendent of Eastern Regional High School. ?The award acknowledges our excellent educational programs and our association with Rowan University, which benefits our schools and community.?
