Rowan Presents Lindback Award to Dr. Jay Kuder

Rowan University presented the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award to Dr. S. Jay
Kuder, a professor in and chairperson of the Department of Special Educational
Services/Instruction in the College of Education, at its convocation ceremony held on
September 14. Funded by the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation, the teaching
award recognizes a full-time, permanent faculty member with an excellent record in
teaching.
Kuder is an active researcher and writer who has served the University for 16 years. Kuder,
a resident of Moorestown, is recognized for his knowledge and expertise in the field of
special education, particularly in the area of communication disorders. His book on language
and communication disorders titled <+>Teaching Students with Language and Communication
Disabilities<+> is used throughout the country. He has published numerous articles on topics
that include teacher preparation, teaching students with learning disabilities and language
disabilities. He has served as a consultant and received numerous grants to pursue his
research.
An active member of numerous professional organizations, Kuder is a Fellow of the
American Association on Mental Retardation and a member of the Academy on Mental
Retardation, the New Jersey Advisory Council for Special Education, the Council for
Exceptional Children and Phi Delta Kappa.
Kuder, a national leader in the field of special education, earned an Ed.D. in reading and
language from Boston University, an M.Ed. in special education from Temple University and
a B.A. in history from Trinity College, Hartford, Conn.
Prior to joining the Rowan University faculty, he also worked for the Center for Human
Services in Boston; the State University of New York at Albany; Middlesex Community
College, Bedford, Mass.; Boston City Hospital; Boston University; and Children’s Hospital,
Boston, Mass. He also has been employed as a teacher and counselor at schools and
organizations in the Delaware Valley.
In supporting Kuder for the award, Dr. Burton Sisco, dean of the College of Education at
Rowan University, noted, <+>Dr. Kuder provides an outstanding model of excellent teaching
for his students and is an asset to Rowan University.<+>
<+>I am truly honored to receive this award because it recognizes excellence in teaching. As a
faculty member I do many things, including research, writing, advising, and serving on
committees. But teaching is the core of the University, and I am honored to be considered a
good teacher,<+> said Kuder, who is married and the father of three daughters.
