Hispanic Caucus Names Rowan Professor Outstanding Latina/o Faculty in Higher Education

Glassboro- The Hispanic Caucus of the American Association for Higher
Education (AAHE) will present Dr. Yvonne Enid Gonzalez Rodriguez, an
Elementary Education/Early Childhood professor at Rowan University,
Glassboro, NJ, the Hispanic Caucus Award for Outstanding Latina/o
Faculty in Higher Education.
The Hispanic Caucus presents the award annually to a faculty member
who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishment in his or her
discipline as well as support of Hispanic issues. Rodriguez will receive the
award March 30 during the annual Hispanic Caucus Forum at the AAHE
national conference in Anaheim, Calif.
Rodriguez, of Gloucester Township, earned a B.A. in sociology and
history from Rutgers University, an M.A. in elementary education from
then-Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) and an Ed.D. in
adult and continuing education/urban education from Temple University.
She has taught in New Jersey public and private schools; was founding
educational coordinator for the first bilingual day care center in New
Jersey for the Department of Community Affairs; has been a professor in
New Jersey, New York and Puerto Rico; and has been a member of the
Rowan University faculty since 1973. She is the mother of two daughters,
Marnid and Jennifer Rodriguez.
She also has served as an educational consultant for the U.S. Department
of Energy, NASA, the Ford Foundation, Americore, the State of New
Jersey Chancellor of Higher Education and several Commissioners of
Education, the City of Camden, Educational Testing Service, numerous
school districts and colleges and other organizations.
Rodriguez is co-author of <+>The History and Contributions of Puerto Ricans
in the Diaspora,<+> and she has written close to 30 refereed journal
articles, book chapters, monographs and technical reports. She has
served as a manuscript reviewer for Educational Researcher, Journal of
Teacher Education and Latino/a Research Review (formerly the Latino
Review of Books) and has presented extensively throughout the world.
Active in department, college and university committees, Rodriguez has
taken part in numerous professional development and conference
activities and conducted a wide range of research. Among her research
topics funded by Rowan University were <+>A National Hispanic Bilingual
Engineering Community College Articulation Model,<+> <+>Cultural Moments:
Pedagogical Strategy for Teaching to Diversity<+> and <+>Teaching for
Diversity: Multicultural Education.<+> Among the many grants and awards
she has received were The Hispanic Mental Health Community Association
Educator of the Year Award, the Rowan University Excellence in
Scholarship and Excellence in Teaching awards and the American Red
Cross Service Award.
Rodriguez has served on several New Jersey advisory committees,
including the Department of Higher Education Language Acquisition
Committee. She is a member of the AAHE, Association of Teacher
Educators, American Education Research Association, Latin American
Studies Association, American Federation of Teachers and other
professional organizations and is an institutional representative of the
American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education.
