Use Common Sense in On-Line Job Searches
Use Common Sense in On-Line Job Searches
January 30, 2000
Glassboro-The Internet can be a helpful tool for job seekers --
including
college students nearing graduation -- but it needs to be used properly.
Lori Block, assistant director in the Career & Academic Planning Center
at Rowan University, said the first step a job hunter should take in an
Internet search is see if the firm has a web site and, if so, review it
carefully. Then, check the company out in a reputable publication, such
as the Wall Street Journal, Time or the Dalton Business Directory, to
make sure the company is not a fly-by-night operation. If the firm seems
legitimate, consider sending a resume, but make sure to be attentive as
to how the firm wants to receive the resume (for instance, some may not
want it as a Word attachment). Block advises that job searchers be
careful about what they put out on the Internet, know where they are
sending their resume and not respond to a blind Internet advertisement.
<+>It's a great medium to expedite the job search,<+> Block said of the
Internet.
Block can discuss searching for jobs via the Internet, salary negotiation,
the job market, credential building, internships, general job searching tips
and finding that dream job. She can be reached directly at (856) 256-
4452.
