Rain can’t dampen spirit as C.S.M., Health Professions celebrate Commencement

Day two of Rowan Commencement 2019

There were cheers of a different type inside Esbjornson Gym Monday, May 13, where Commencement activities were forced indoors by inclement weather.

On the second of five days of Commencement 2019 programming, Rowan University welcomed graduating students, family and friends of the College of Science & Mathematics and the School of Health Professions during morning and afternoon programs.

The early program included ceremonies for graduates of the departments of Computer Science and Mathematics as well as for Nursing and Health & Exercise Science majors while, in the afternoon, Rowan celebrated graduates from the departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Molecular and Cellular Biosciences and Psychology.

An estimated 1,110 students took part in the two ceremonies and, in addition to honoring students, the program paid tribute to retiring Health & Exercise Science Professor Edward C. Chaloupka, founder of Rowan’s exercise research laboratory.

Addressing the morning group, C.S.M and S.H.P. Dean Cristian Botez commended graduates for high academic achievement and for early acceptance to prestigious graduate programs and job offers.

“You represent the University well beyond the academic stage,” he said.

A surprise honored guest

Rowan this year honored 57 graduating students throughout the university who are serving, or have served, in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Midway through Monday’s afternoon program, President Ali Houshmand announced a surprise attendee – Army Staff Sgt. 1st Class Darryl Caulfield, who, returning from service in Afghanistan, surprised his daughter Laura as she graduated with a psychology degree.

“The greatest feeling I have is seeing parents smile when their child graduates,” Houshmand said.

With that, Caulfield bounded onto the stage where his shocked and elated daughter joined him for an emotional embrace. (Watch the video!)

Because of the weather, Tuesday’s Commencement programs will also be indoors. Read more.
