Rowan creates new Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion


Rowan last month announced the creation of the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), a space within the University that will affect virtually all of its students, faculty and staff.

DEI will develop and sustain meaningful partnerships with internal and external constituents to achieve a more diverse and inclusive community; utilize data to inform and innovate; and implement culturally responsive and relevant programming to ensure an equitable educational environment for all.

“While the Division’s work will impact every unit across the University, it initially will include Achieving Success through Collaboration, Engagement and Determination (ASCEND), which comprises the EOF and RISE programs; the Faculty Center; Social Justice, Inclusion and Conflict Resolution (SJICR) and the Title IX office,” President Ali Houshmand said.

Dr. Monika Williams Shealey, dean of the College of Education, will lead the new division as senior vice president. Dr. Penny McPherson, assistant vice president for Diversity and Organizational Effectiveness, will join DEI as inaugural vice president.

The Division, and a to-be-formed council on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion — with students, faculty and staff — will help make Rowan a model where equity for all and inclusion are weaved into the fabric of the University.
