College Factual, an online data aggregator that produces annual “best of” lists of American colleges and universities, this week issued a report finding Rowan among the best schools in the nation for non-traditional students.

Students fitting a “non-traditional” profile are learners of any age, typically men and women who are not recent high school graduates and who may be returning to college or starting a degree program after gaining life experiences such as service in the military, starting a career and/or starting a family.

The organization ranked Rowan #2 in New Jersey – just behind Rutgers University, New Brunswick – out of 20 colleges and universities ranked for adults returning to school. Nationwide, Rowan was ranked 91 out of 1,164 colleges and universities surveyed.

“Our Rankings for Returning Adults were developed based on the premise that these students are looking for flexible learning options and high-quality outcomes for graduates,” College Factual reports. “Thus, our rankings emphasize colleges that offer the ability to take online courses and other factors that are important to older students. Within the mix, you’ll find traditional schools that offer online programs as well as accredited online colleges that provide the best outcomes for students.”

In determining the best schools for non-traditional students, College Factual considered information taken from three main categories – financial factors, degree completion rates and student body composition and support including:

  • Loan default and repayment rate;
  • Postgraduate earnings and unemployment rates;
  • Acceptance of life and/or military credits;
  • Per credit charge;
  • The 6 and 8-year graduation rates of returning adult and part-time students;
  • The number of undergraduates who are considered non-traditional;
  • The number of learners taking classes online;
  • Availability of evening and weekend classes as well as daycare for colleges that aren't exclusively online.

Horacio Sosa, vice president for Rowan’s Division of Global Learning & Partnerships, said the College Factual findings reflect a long-planned outcome in University programming – degree and certificate options that are geared toward many 21st Century students.

“Non-traditional students represent an ever-growing segment of our population,” Sosa said. “As educators, a big part of our mission is to not only create programming that helps students become better prepared and more competitive in the job market, but to offer instruction in convenient modes of delivery, locations and formats.”
