Rowan earns ranking among nation’s 100 safest colleges

Rowan University has been named one of the top 100 safest college campuses in the United States by the National Council for Home Safety and Security.

Rowan was ranked 58th on the list, which includes institutions with enrollment of 10,000 or more students. The ranking was compiled using the most recent data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting and the Campus Safety Survey distributed by the U.S. Department of Education.

Colleges that made the top 100 boast low crime totals on campus and surrounding communities.

According to the council, “each school’s safety score was calculated by analyzing crimes reported by universities, including rapes, robberies, assaults, burglaries, motor vehicle theft and arsons. Also factoring into the safety score were violent and property crime rates for the cities in which the schools were located, and the number of law enforcement officers employed by the institution per 1,000 students.”

The University takes a comprehensive approach to campus safety, says Rowan President Ali A. Houshmand. That includes implementing the highest safety standards through the Department of Public Safety, as well as providing safety programs through various departments across all of Rowan’s campuses, Houshmand notes.

Rowan’s Department of Public Safety in 2011 became the first law enforcement agency from a New Jersey college to gain accreditation from CALEA, the National Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc.

The department has achieved reaccreditation twice—in 2014 and in 2017.

CALEA accreditation means that the department adheres to the same standards as the nation’s finest law enforcement agencies.

In 2015, Public Safety became the first department at a New Jersey institution to require officers to wear body cameras.

“We are very proud of the initiatives we’ve undertaken University-wide to create safe environments on all of our campuses,” says Houshmand. “We work across the board to provide training and educational programs that promote safety for all.”

The National Council for Home Safety and Security is a trade association comprised of home security professionals across the United States. Last year, the council ranked Rowan 38th in the nation.
