Women's indoor track team wins NJAC Championship

The Rowan University women’s indoor track team won the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship on Friday at the Armory. It is the Profs’ first conference championship in women’s indoor track.

The Rowan University women’s indoor track team won the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship on Friday at the Armory. It is the Profs’ first conference championship in women’s indoor track.

Rowan totaled 204 points, surpassing defending conference champion Ramapo College with 166. Prior to 2012, The College of New Jersey had captured 14 straight titles since the first indoor championship in 1997-1998.

The Profs recorded seven individual conference champions and won three NJAC relay titles. Shailah Williams (fr. Pemberton, NJ/Pemberton Twp.) was the winner of the 200 meters with a school record time of 25.83. The old mark was 25.96 by Karen Corsey (1991). Brianna Crofton (so. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) ran 57.00 in the 400 meters for first place. She broke the conference record of 57.02 that was held by Montclair State University’s Tierra Hicks (2003).

Melirah Searcy (so. Edison, NJ/Edison) finished first (2:18.07) in the 800 meters. Vanessa Wright (sr. Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) won the one mile (5:01.29) and 3000 meters (10:21.76). Meghan Borz (jr. Buena, NJ/Buena Reg.) came in first (18:08.45) in the 5000 meters. Jamie Thompson (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick) took first (9.10) in the 60 meter hurdles. Her time was better than the NJAC mark of 9.21 by Ashadaya Patterson from Montclair State in 2012.

Rowan won the 4x200 (1:42.22) and 4x400 (3:56.90) meter relays. The Profs improved on their record of 1:43.15 in the 4x200 meter relay at the New York University Fastrack Challenge. The 4x200 meter relay consisted of Williams, Searcy, Shantel Beckford (so. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) and Thompson. Tashay Wilson (so. Hillside, NJ/Hillside), Jewel Brown (fr. Clayton, NJ/Clayton), Searcy and Crofton were on the 4x400. The winning distance medley relay (12:50.04) included Brianna Streater (so. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown), Joyce Perry (fr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick), Vanessa Valdes (fr. Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) and Lisa Jones (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest).

The 4x800 meter relay of Vanessa Wright, Jessalynn Wright (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), Streater and Valdes came in second (9:36.81). Beckford took second (8.00) in the 60 meter dash while Williams and Crofton were third (8.05) and fifth (8.11) respectively. Crofton also had a third place (25.98) in the 200 meters. Thompson came in second in the long jump with a leap of 17’ 9.25” (5.42 meters).

Brown took second in the triple jump with a school record of 36’ 9.5” (11.21 meters). The previous mark was 36’ 1.5” (11.01 meters) by Jessica Carlson (2012). Carlson (jr. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) finished third (36’ 5.75”, 11.12 meters) in the triple jump and was fourth (9.44) in the 60 meter hurdles. Wilson and Brown were third (59.45) and fourth (1:00.12) respectively in the 400 meters.

Borz had a third place (10:29.40) in the 3000 meters. Jess Lomanaco (jr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) broke the school record in the weight throw and finished fourth. She threw 43’ 0.5” (13.12 meters), which was better than 42’ 11.5” (13.09 meters) by Emily Spieker (2012). Spieker (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) took fifth in the weight throw with 42’ 8.75” (13.02 meters). She also came in eighth in the shot put with 32’ 11.25” (10.04 meters).

Thompson finished sixth (26.37) in the 200 meters and Perry was seventh (1:01.22) in the 400 meters. In the 5000 meters, Onyi Obelle (fr. Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) and Priscila Antuna (jr. Waretown, NJ/Southern Reg.) were sixth (19:34.02) and seventh (19:46.38) respectively. Jones came in seventh (10:47.15) in the 3000 meters. Williams took seventh in the high jump with a height of 4’ 10.25” (1.48 meters). Kelsey Lewis (fr. Belford, NJ/Middletown N.) followed in eighth place (4’ 10.25”, 1.48 meters). Jessalynn Wright and Kayla Leahey (jr. Keansburg, NJ/Warwick Valley) tied for seventh (6’ 10.25”, 2.70 meters) in the pole vault. Jessalynn Wright was ninth (2:24.40) in the 800 meters. In the one mile, Lisa Leszcynski (fr. Trenton, NJ/Robbinsville) had a ninth place (5:35.17) followed by Christina Ricci (fr. Spotswood, NJ/Spotswood), 10th (5:36.49).

Next week, Rowan returns to the Armory for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships on Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2.
