16 middle school girls selected for unique engineering conference

Who: Rowan University’s College of Engineering

What: is hosting a one week long engineering workshop for 16 middle school (7th and 8th grade) teenage girls

When/Where: July 10 - 14 in Rowan Hall, Rowan University.

Why: Research shows that women are sorely underrepresented in the sciences, a problem some say is caused by societal norms. The conference is being held to expose pre-adolescent girls (7th and 8th graders) to the field of engineering. Research shows that there is a dramatic dwindling of girls’ self-esteem as they enter adolescence. This drop is often preceded by lowered achievement and confidence in math and science. This program will expose the women to careers in engineering, perhaps encouraging them to take more of an interest in math and science. More than 65 students applied to the program, but only 16 were selected.
