Rowan's shot at national title fell victim to a timing error

It was just one second of time, but Rowan football coach K.C. Keeler will remember it forever. That's because it cost him a shot - perhaps his best shot - at the NCAA Division III championship.

"They're calling it unfortunate at Bridgewater," Keeler said yesterday, three days after his visiting Profs lost, 29-24, to Bridgewater (Va.) in the Division III semifinals. "It's not unfortunate. It's criminal that someone decided to play God in this situation."

Keeler was incensed because nearly everybody involved has conceded that the Eagles advanced to Saturday's championship game against Mount Union in Salem, Va., because the clock operator added at least three seconds to the end of the game.

And that was just enough time for Bridgewater to score the winning points.
