Layers of Authenticity
On view November 6 - December 20, 2023

In this group show, five artists create work by altering lens-based imagery pulled from print, the internet, and their own photography. Utilizing unique processes of production, they reveal authentic and insightful statements about our current political and social landscape, and the ambiguousness and misconceptions of historical events, places, and people. Maria Dumlao is Filipino now based in Philadelphia. Her work reflects on the environmental and cultural impacts of colonialism in her home country and the multiple narratives that have been obscured and concealed. Gabriel Martinez, of Cuban descent, is based in Philadelphia. His work considers the inversion of perception, distance, dislocation, and communication due to immigration within the Cuban community. Paul Anthony Smith is Jamaican and based in New York City. Applying picotage to pigment prints he amplifies issues of identity within the African diaspora. Eric Toscano is a New Jersey based Rowan alum. Using images found in vintage travel and sports magazines, his collages evoke a nostalgic, detached response to extreme environmental events. Steven Earl Weber is based in Philadelphia and his screened photographs examine the invisibleness of those struggling with drug addiction.
