Rowan 'rocks the boat' with production of Guys & Dolls
The Runyonesque denizens of 1950s New York come to life once again in Rowan University’s production of the classic American musical Guys & Dolls, running for four performances only April 19 – 21 in Pfleeger Concert Hall on the university’s Glassboro campus.
Considered by many to be among the best from the Golden Age musical comedy, Guys & Dolls offers a heartfelt but comic blend of romance, gambling and salvation as a colorful cast of gangsters, showgirls and missionaries get mixed up in New York.
The musical, with a book by Jo Swerling & Abe Burrows and a score by Frank Loesser, is inspired by the stories of Damon Runyon. The beloved score features such standards as "Luck Be A Lady," "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat," "If I Were a Bell" and many more.
“We’re looking for every opportunity to be funny,” says director Rebecca Rich (who toured in a production as one of her first professional gigs as an actor) while also working to “make the characters as real as possible.”
The creative team joining Rich includes musical director Marian Stieber and conductor Salvatore Scarpa, choreographer Henry Roy, costume designer Brian Strachan, lighting designer Robert Thorpe and set designer Bart Healy. The student actors represent a broad spectrum of the campus community with cast members from the Department of Theatre & Dance, as well as those majoring in Education, Journalism, Music and Engineering among others.
Presented by the College of Performing Arts and the Departments of Theatre & Dance and Music, Guys & Dolls will be performed on April 19 & 20 at 8:00 p.m. and April 20 & 21 at 3:00 p.m. in Pfleeger Concert Hall. Tickets are $20, general admission; and $15, seniors/non-Rowan students/alumni/staff. Rowan students are admitted FREE with valid ID (Rowan student tickets cannot be reserved online; contact the box office). Call 856-256-4545 or visit rowan.tix.com.
