The Dean’s Distinguished Speakers Series in the College of Science and Mathematics at Rowan University will feature Raymond Blum, site reliability engineer at Google, Inc., on Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Boyd Recital Hall in Wilson Hall.

Blum will discuss “Forged not Broken — How Google recognizes the value of mistakes.”

The guest speaker, who leads a team of site reliability engineers charged with keeping Google’s and its users’ data safe and durable, will discuss how blame too often is used to assign punitive rather than corrective measures and a strategy for learning from mistakes and applying this knowledge to minimize risk in the long term.

Before joining Google, Blum ran a hosting company and taught computer science after two decades in the financial and media industries.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
