Dear University Community,
The start of every school year is exciting – new classes, new challenges, new opportunities. This beginning promises to be one of the most spectacular ever!
As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Henry Rowan's $100 million transformative gift to then-Glassboro State College, we begin a year that even Mr. Rowan – a man of uncommon vision – couldn't have imagined. "The Gift," as we've come to call it, didn't just change our University, it set us on the path to greatness, and this is the year Rowan really assumes that mantle.
Within the last month alone, we've opened Cooper Medical School of Rowan University in Camden with our partner, The Cooper Health System, and we've been designated only the second comprehensive research university in the state.
Opening a medical school and obtaining comprehensive research status would be momentous for any university. For Rowan, these are only two great things of many. In addition, we're partnering with Rutgers University in Camden to create a College of Health Sciences, and we’re working toward partnering with the School of Osteopathic Medicine (S.O.M.) in Stratford. Once the partnership with S.O.M. is complete, Rowan will be one of just two universities in the nation to offer both a traditional M.D.-granting medical program and one in osteopathic medicine.
This year, we also are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the well-respected Rohrer College of Business, a College that has a history of providing a first-rate education and contributing to the business community and our region at large. And you’ll notice great progress along Rowan Boulevard as the $300 million project continues to develop. Construction will be underway within days on both the Marriott Courtyard Hotel and the multilevel new home for the College of Graduate & Continuing Education, with classrooms, administrative space, ground floor retail space and a parking garage.
Additionally, we've restructured colleges to be more efficient, which will maximize students’ educational and career opportunities. The restructured colleges are Communication & Creative Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Science & Mathematics. Our enrollment stands steady, as planned, and Rowan is enjoying the highest-caliber applicant pool in its nearly 90-year history. Student Life has many events planned to supplement classroom activities. And, as always, our Rowan Profs sports teams are fit, highly ranked and ready to play.
Welcome back. Have a great year!
Ali A. Houshmand, Ph.D.
