Louis Szgalsky and Kevin Touhey of Salesianum School in Wilmington, Del., took first prize in the 22nd Annual Programming Contest held by the Computer Science Department at Rowan University on April 25. Second prize went to Jennifer Chau and Hein Htat, of Mainland Regional High School in Linwood.  Winners took home prizes that included laser printers, digital cameras, iPods and flash drives.  Corporate sponsors Apple, Blockbuster, International Laser, Office Max, Prentice Hall, Rovani Graphics and Texas Instruments donated these and other prizes.

Student competitors had to program a computer to evaluate a grid of numbers according to the rules of "Sudoku" and report on any numbers that were incorrectly placed.  Number grids, a special case of two-dimensional arrays, are commonly encountered in many real-world programming situations.

While the students were working, their teacher-coaches were led through an analysis of how the problem could be solved by Thomas Enright, a computer science major at Rowan who had assisted with creating the problem and developing an example program.  In addition to an overview of the problem, teachers attended a presentation by Mark Cimino, a local attorney, who discussed recent court cases involving public schools, free speech and the Internet.

Judges included faculty and alumni from Rowan's Computer Science Department and graduate students from Rutgers University. While judges were evaluating the programs, competitors were entertained at a show at the Edelman Planetarium on Rowan's campus. About 70 students from eight high schools in New Jersey and Delaware participated in this year's contest.
