Rowan joins Focus the Nation for week of environmental activities

Rowan University will join more than 1,000 institutions - mostly colleges and universities - the week of January 28 for Focus the Nation, a national discussion on global warming and sustainability solutions for America. The week will culminate on Thursday, January 31, with teach-ins held at Rowan and throughout the United States.

Rowan University will join more than 1,000 institutions - mostly colleges and universities - the week of January 28 for Focus the Nation, a national discussion on global warming and sustainability solutions for America. The week will culminate on Thursday, January 31, with teach-ins held at Rowan and throughout the United States.

The Rowan Focus the Nation Committee welcomes the community to join faculty, staff and students to learn more about the environment, environmental issues and how to become part of the solution. Information tables will be based at the Student Center, Rt. 322, throughout the week, and Rowan is hosting a series of activities and lectures Monday through Thursday, including a presentation on "An Inconvenient Truth," the original talk upon which the award-winning movie was based (Tuesday, January 29, 7:30 p.m. in the Rowan Hall auditorium) and a variety of lectures by professors (Thursday, January 31, all afternoon, in the Student Center). Rowan's Focus the Nation week is being sponsored by the Glassboro Environmental Organization and the Colleges of Engineering, Business, Education, and Liberal Arts & Sciences.

Rowan has a reputation for being environmentally aware, and in the last year the university won several awards for its efforts, including a Governor's Environmental Excellence Award from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection; the New Jersey Clean Energy School of the Year award from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, Office of Clean Energy; the United States Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Quality Award for placing third nationally in waste minimization in RecycleMania in 2006, the EPA Green Power Partnership Award for purchasing 25 percent of the electricity Rowan uses from wind-generated sources and The New Jersey Clean Energy Award for the clean energy the institution purchases.
