Winning on AIR: WGLS grabs four top awards in regional competition

Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM picked up four first-place awards in the Philadelphia AIR (Achievement in Radio) College Awards. Sponsored by the March of Dimes, the AIR awards ceremony is Philadelphia’s premier event that honors outstanding achievements in radio.

Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM picked up four first-place awards in the Philadelphia AIR (Achievement in Radio) College Awards.

Sponsored by the March of Dimes, the AIR awards ceremony is Philadelphia's premier event that honors outstanding achievements in radio. The event also helps raise money to support the March of Dimes.

The awards included:
- Rowan junior radio/television/film (RTF) major Julia Giacoboni was named best college radio public affairs anchor/host. Giacoboni, of Cedarville, is host of "The Women's Room," which airs weekly on WGLS. She is public affairs director at WGLS.

- Stephen Maiorana, Erica Guidetti and Nicole Chiaravalloti were named best college radio news anchors/hosts for "The Rowan Report," the weekly news magazine on WGLS. A resident of Sewell, Maiorana, news director at WGLS, is a junior RTF major with a minor in political science. Guidetti and Chiaravalloti both earned their bachelor’s degrees from Rowan in May. Guidetti, who lives in Glenolden, Pa., graduated with an RTF degree. Chiaravalloti, of Pine Hill, earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism.

- James Vassallo and Pat Moynahan won for best college radio sports play-by-play announcer/host for their broadcast of the Camden Riversharks game versus the Road Warriors. A junior from Marlton, Vassallo is an RTF major with a minor in journalism. Moynahan, a Cinnaminson resident, earned his bachelor's degree in RTF in 2006 and master's degree in public relations in 2007.

- Senior RTF major Jess Ortuso, of Howell, won best college radio commercial for her promo of the grand opening of the "Rocky Balboa" movie at the Broadway Theatre in Pitman earlier this year. Ortuso is co-director of promotions at WGLS.

Since 1993, WGLS has won 129 national and regional awards.
