On Saturday, Oct. 27 at 9:13 p.m., Donald Farrell and a group of friends left Beau Rivage, an off-campus condominium complex, and walked toward Triad Apartments, an on-campus residence hall. To get to Triad, they passed the intersection of Rt. 322 and Bowe Blvd., a heavily traveled intersection on the western edge of campus. Less than 100 feet from that corner is a convenience store, XPress Food Mart, that is adjacent to a roadway that leads to Triad Apartments.

In that vicinity, they were approached by a group of four or five young men who asked them where they could find a party. As they talked, two of the men brutally attacked Farrell, a 19-year-old sophomore from Boonton. Nearby witnesses and Farrell's companions all say the attack was so quick that they had little time to react other than to call 911.

This was homecoming weekend for Rowan University. There was an increased police presence both on and off campus Saturday evening. Rowan Police responded to the 911 calls in only 90 seconds. By then, however, the assailants had fled with Farrell's wallet and phone.

Rowan's student-operated Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported Farrell to Cooper Trauma Center, in Camden. On their way to the hospital, the EMS squad revived Farrell twice. Farrell was put on life support shortly after arriving at Cooper.

Farrell's parents were at the hospital that evening, along with University officials. Unfortunately, Farrell passed away on Sunday.
