Mathematicians from throughout the state will come to Rowan University on Saturday, March 31, as Rowan hosts both the spring meeting of the Mathematical Association of America-New Jersey Section (MAA-NJ) and the fourth annual Garden State Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (GSUMC).
The joint conference, which runs from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in Wilson Hall, will highlight the achievements of famous Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler on the 300th anniversary of his birth. The conference will include discussions regarding Euler's life and work.
Six faculty members from Rowan's Mathematics Department-- Christopher Lacke, Paul J. Laumakis, Mike Morelli, Tom Osler, Jay Schiffman, and Dexter C. Whittinghill III --will present their research at the conference.
Nine undergraduate students? Robert Booth, Robert Buonpastore, Laura Doot, Josh Dunn, Walter Jacob, Matt Oster, Andrew Robertson, Kathryn Robertson and Lucas Willis?also will present their research.
The conference will open with a talk by Osler titled "The joy of student-professor collaboration in translating Euler's papers." Osler and his students have collaborated on a number of research projects focusing on the work of Euler, who published a remarkable 866 scholarly papers in his lifetime.
Professor William Dunham of Muhlenberg College is the second invited morning speaker. The meeting concludes with Professor Peter Sarnak of Princeton University, who is the keynote speaker for the joint meeting.
The GSUMC will feature a team problem-solving mathematics competition in the morning. Seven teams of Rowan undergraduates will compete.
The conference is open to the public. For complete programs, visit the MAA-NJ site at http://www.rowan.edu/math/hassen/MAANJProgramSP07.htm or the GSUMC site at http://www.rowan.edu/math/hassen/GSUMC2007Program.htm .
