Rowan University computer science assistant professor Dr. Adrian Rusu, of Pitman, presented the paper "Automatic Generation of Sequence-Style Notes from Live Lecture" at the 9th International Conference on Engineering Education on July 24 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Rusu co-authored the conference paper with Gary Dainton, of Rowan's Center for the Advancement of Learning, who contributed information about learning patterns.
The conference paper introduced an innovative program that can receive written text from a professor's lecture, extract the most important information and arrange it in a sequential form. The program encourages active learning and allows students to listen, without interruption, to a professor's lecture, according to Rusu.
Rusu had an additional paper he co-authored, "Adaptive Binary Trees Visualization with Respect to User-Specified Quality Measures," presented at the 10th International Conference on Information Visualization on July 6 in London. Rusu's co-authors were Rowan 2006 computer science graduate Christopher Clement, of Glendora, and Brown University computer science student Radu Jianu, who made the presentation.
The paper introduced a method in which the best algorithm for visualizing a large hierarchy, such as a family tree, is always chosen, for any number of aesthetic qualities specified by a user. One such aesthetic quality is keeping a large, visual hierarchy on one page so that the user does not need to scroll.
