The Rowan University Foundation has announced that it is the recipient of a software donation from Maryland-headquartered OPNET Technologies, Inc., with commercial value estimated at nearly $200,000. The donation provides Rowan with advanced technology for teaching and research related to networking technologies. For graduating seniors, experience with such software increases their marketability.

OPNET's donation, which will benefit Rowan's Computer Science Department, includes the Modeler product with additional software modules and is the largest donation the firm has made to Rowan since its first gift to the University in 2003. According to information from OPNET, Modeler enables students to design and study communication networks, devices, protocols and applications. Through simulation, students can examine network operations and performance, devise plans for improvement and learn about existing and emerging technologies in the area of data communication and computer networks.

Sue Cole, OPNET's vice president of Marketing and Business Development, said, "OPNET has a longstanding commitment to supporting higher education by donating our software though our University Program. Since its inception, more than one thousand universities have taken advantage of the program to enable teaching and research."

Dr. Vasil Y. Hnatyshin, an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at Rowan University, said, "The software is a great teaching tool. I use it in all the networking classes that I teach. The software assists the learning process by providing an easy-to-use graphical interface that gets the students interested in data communications and networks. They can study complex networks with a few mouse clicks."

The software also lends itself to extracurricular activities. Hnatyshin established a Computer Networking Club, whose members examine various existing networking technologies and research emerging trends and ideas using the OPNET software.
