Resolutions are high on people?s list at the start of the New Year. The following Rowan University professors are available to discuss resolutions and other New Year?s-related topics.

Losing weight

Thinking about going on the high protein/low carbohydrate diet to lose weight? Well, there?s good news and bad news. The good news is that you really will lose weight and, even better, lose a lot at the start. The bad news is that you will gain it back (almost a guarantee, based on long-term outcomes), plus you have a good chance of becoming dehydrated, raising your blood pressure and cholesterol, increasing your risk for colon cancer and other problems associated with low-fiber diets and missing out on lots of important nutrients.

Spencer, who teaches nutrition and has conducted weight management seminars and presented on weight loss at professional conferences, says the benefits of being a healthy weight include a reduction of risk for certain diseases, including diabetes, blood pressure, gall bladder problems and arthritis, which definitely have been linked to obesity.

Spencer can speak in depth on topics related to maintaining healthy weight and can discuss theories about why people are overweight. She suggests that people looking to lose weight remember:

-- continue to eat

-- don't starve yourself

-- be consistent with your diet

-- exercise is more important than nutrition; if you change only one thing, make it that you exercise more (Americans eat fewer calories than 50 years ago but we exercise less -- even through simple things like using electronic keyboards instead of manual, operating electric windows on our cars instead of manual)

-- be realistic about your body type or shape - we're not all an ectomorph.

Stress and seasonal depression

Lots of people are feeling more than the usual resolution pressure as we approach the New Year. Because it?s been a difficult year, some people are dealing with a need to change the world ? or at least their own lives -- to make a difference in some way. Fopeano can discuss dealing with stress and holiday/winter <+>blues.<+>

Smoking

Jeffrey, of Pilesgrove, is available to discuss ways to stop smoking. A Rowan psychology professor and director of Rowan's Center for Addiction Studies, Jeffrey heads the Tobacco Dependency Clinic in Glassboro. The center provides individual and group counseling, nicotine replacement therapy and pharmacological aids to those who want to quit smoking. Jeffrey also has done extensive research into smoking on college campuses and is currently working on a state-wide Ecstasy awareness campaign.
