Glassboro - In the fifth annual Communicator Awards international audio competition, WGLS-FM has won The Crystal Award of Excellence in the student produced audio production category for the documentary Facing the Facts: The Use and Abuse of Alcohol. WGLS-FM was also awarded honorable mention in the education category for The Rowan Radio Magic Hat Storytime.

Produced over a 12 week period by WGLS-FM members as part of their requirements for the advanced radio course, Facing the Facts: The Use and Abuse of Alcohol, is a five-part series dealing with such issues as the law, alcoholism as a disease, drinking and driving as well as treatment and recovery. Earlier this year, Facing the Facts: The Use and Abuse of Alcohol, was distributed to all New Jersey radio stations as a result of a grant received from the Rowan University Center for Addiction Studies.

Sponsored by the Rowan University Educational Opportunity Fund/Minority Achievement Program, the College of Communication and the Students For Literacy Club, The Rowan Radio Magic Hat Storytime is a continuing summertime program encouraging reading among children and families. This is the second year The Rowan Radio Magic Hat Storytime received an award in the annual competition.


The Communicator Awards is a national organization founded by communications professionals to recognize individuals and companies in the communications field whose talent and creativity achieves a high standard of excellence and serves as a standard for the industry. The Crystal Award of Excellence is awarded for projects that exceed industry standards in production or communication skills.
