The Association for Worksite Health Promotion (AWHP) has presented
the Annual Undergraduate Program Award for 2000 to the Health
Promotion Fitness Management specialization program at Rowan
University.

The AWHP is a 2,000-member international, non-profit professional
organization dedicated to supporting health promotion/wellness
interventions for employees and their dependents through the worksite.
Members consist mainly of directors/managers of employee wellness
programs/centers.

Each year, AWHP presents up to five awards in different areas, three
related to worksite programs (large company, small company, non-profit
agency) and two in the academic realm (undergraduate and graduate
preparation programs for the field of health promotion). Of the five
organizations that won awards, Rowan was rated in first place, earning
more points among the judges than any other applicant.

The Rowan University program, part of the Health and Exercise Science
Department in the College of Education, was cited for an exemplary
curriculum that serves as a model for other institutions. The program
meets the rigorous criteria for undergraduate preparation programs set
by AWHP, includes all of the major knowledge and skill areas required by
the field, is broad-based and contains extensive field experience.

The Rowan University AWHP student chapter is one of the largest and
most active in the nation, with more than 30 students participating each
year. Their projects include major events, such as hosting a mid-Atlantic
regional health promotion conference at Rowan, presenting at
professional conferences, coordinating campus-wide cholesterol and
blood pressure screenings and coordinating the annual Health/Wellness
Fair at Rowan each year.

Dr. Leslie Spencer, of the Health and Exercise Science Department, will
receive the award at the annual international AWHP conference in
September in Orlando, Fla.
