Local Radio Personality Celebrates Five Decades on the Air

Glassboro-Sammy <+>Pepper<+> Bonavita, of Mt. Ephraim, will celebrate his 30th year as an on-air personality for Rowan University's radio station, Rowan Radio, 89.7 WGLS-FM on Dec. 31, helping the station ring in the new millennium.

Bonavita joined WGLS-FM in the fall of 1969 as a student at Rowan University. At the stroke of midnight on Dec. 31, Bonavita's 30 years will have spanned five decades, bridging the '60s to the new millennium.

Rowan Radio will air the 30th anniversary show on Dec. 31 from 9 a.m. until noon. The show will feature music from Bonavita's first show, including Deep Purple, Three Dog Night, The Who, The Doors, and the Beatles. The show also will feature taped highlights from Bonavita's first program.

WGLS-FM is Rowan University's award-winning, student-run radio station. The National Association of College Broadcasters named WGLS-FM <+>College Station of the Year<+> for 1996-97.

Bonavita earned a B.A. in sociology from the university in 1987 and continues to take classes today. He works full-time for Catholic Star Herald, the newspaper of the Camden Diocese.
