CHERRY HILL

The township's business community was well represented this year in a reputable report focused on South Jersey's fastest-growing companies.

Seven Cherry Hill-based businesses -- by far the most of any town -- appeared on the 11th annual South Jersey 25 list compiled by the Philadelphia Business Journal and Rowan University's College of Business to spotlight the region's successful privately held companies.

They ranged from employee benefits firms to a graphics business to a computer software support company.

In recent years, the list has included between three and four Cherry Hill businesses, said Margaret van Brunt, the business school's assistant dean. The fact the number spiked to seven this year is notable, she stated, considering the report covers eight South Jersey counties.

"It probably does reflect Cherry Hill is doing something to support business," van Brunt said.

But she noted companies must be nominated, either by themselves or someone else, to even be considered for the report. That means there could be faster growing companies in South Jersey that failed to apply and they could be located outside of Cherry Hill, she cautioned.

Businesses flourish

Here are the Cherry Hill businesses that appeared on this year's South Jersey 25 fastest-growing companies list:

SunRx Inc. The company manages prescription drug benefits for employers, labor unions and government entities and competes against such industry heavyweights as Caremark Inc. and Express Scripts. SunRx advertises that it saves clients money because it discloses all its revenue and only charges an administrative fee.

It currently manages prescription benefits for about 200,000 people and expects that number to grow to 500,000 by January, CEO Gerard Ferro said.

SunRx was ranked No. 1 in last year's Philadelphia 100, the Philadelphia Business Journal's report on the Delaware Valley's fastest-growing companies. Entrepreneur magazine also rated it a top-20 hot new business for the last two years.

FrontEnd Graphics Inc. The female-owned business provides services such as layout, design, photography and digital advertising production to help its clients sell their products and/or message.

FrontEnd has about 300 clients nationwide, company president Betty Maul said. The list includes such notables as Lockheed Martin, Office Depot and Forbes magazine.

Tripod Technologies. The firm helps companies build and manage open source software for their business applications. It doesn't cost anything to use open source software, CEO Badri Nittoor said. Tripod helps businesses evaluate open source products, install the ones they need for their operations and then provide system support.

Markeim-Chalmers Inc. -- The commercial real estate firm was founded in 1922 and provides assistance with sales, leasing, acquisition and investments. The family-owned company continues to grow after all these years because of its reputation and South Jersey's continued economic growth, said Fred Berlinsky, the company's president.

AmeriQuest Transportation and Logistics Resources. The national business helps companies with fleets of 100 or more trucks reduce their transportation costs.

The company uses a mix of best practices and technology to help its clients' truck fleets operate more efficiently, said Doug Clark, the president and CEO.

AmeriQuest appeared on Inc. magazine's 500 list, a nationwide ranking of fast-growing companies, for two out of the last three years.

It ranked first on the South Jersey 25 in 2000 and made the list last year, Clark said.

Countrywide Pre-Paid Legal Services Inc. -- The business markets and administers affordable legal plans for companies that offer it as part of their employee benefits package.

Countrywide has more than 300 corporate clients primarily in the Mid-Atlantic region. It's made the South Jersey 25 list six times, company president Len Felton said.

Scientific Search. The company recruits full-time employees and temporary staff for the region's pharmaceutical, biotech and engineering firms. It specializes in finding experienced professionals, said Joseph Peters, company president.

This is the Scientific Search's third consecutive year on the South Jersey 25 list, Peters said.
